Look at the pictures. How do they make you feel? Do you think it is important for art to look realistic?

The paintings make me feel calm and curious. Their bright colours and unusual shapes create a peaceful but slightly mysterious atmosphere. They do not look completely realistic, but they express the artist’s feelings and personal view of the world.
I do not think that art always has to look realistic. A painting can be valuable because of its colours, composition, emotions and original style. Sometimes an unrealistic picture helps us see an ordinary place in a new way.

Read the descriptions and match them to the paintings. —

1 This shows a sleepy seaside village that is made busy and vibrant by the bright contrasting colours.
2 In this painting, the viewer’s eye is led in steps from the trees in the foreground to the valley, and then the mountain beyond.
3 This is a dark moody night scene which is made lively by the warm, comforting colours of the house. —
4 The simple shapes and light colours in this painting make it charming and romantic. —

1 D — L’Estaque with Red Roofs — «
2 B — Montagne Sainte-Victoire — «

The Father of Modern Art —
Paul Cézanne is regarded as the artist who bridged the gap between the school of Impressionism of the late 19th century and the beginning of Modern Art in the early 20th century. Both Picasso and Matisse, two of the greatest Modern artists of the 20th century, referred to Cézanne as “the father of us all”. Cézanne’s greatest contribution to painting was his development of colour, composition and perspective in his search for the perfect balance of nature and art, and the way he changed forever how artists who followed after him approached a canvas.
Cézanne was born into a rich French family, so he never had to struggle for his art due to financial difficulties. In fact, it was his wealth that allowed him to continue to work on his own style of painting, even though it was largely ignored by the other French artists. It was not until the final years of his life that the art world finally began to recognise his talent.
Not long after his death, in 1906, a major exhibition of his paintings was held in Paris and it took the art world by storm. Cézanne’s art led to artists becoming more and more interested in using multiple views of the same subject. It also freed later artists from a dependence on natural and realistic forms in their depiction of the world around them.
Cézanne was, without doubt, a titan of the art world. His legacy was to give the artists who came after him the opportunity to look at the world in a completely new light.

The text is about Cézanne using “shifting perspectives”. This means that when you look at the painting your eye does not focus just on one main thing in the picture. Look at the paintings again and say how you think the artist has used this technique.

Cézanne uses shifting perspectives by showing different parts of a scene from slightly different viewpoints. There is not always one clear central object. Instead, the viewer’s eye moves around the whole painting.
In Montagne Sainte-Victoire, our eye travels from the trees in the foreground to the fields and then to the mountain in the distance. In Jas de Bouffan, the house and the surrounding buildings seem to be viewed from different angles. In L’Estaque with Red Roofs, the roofs, trees and sea form separate areas of colour and attract our attention equally. This makes the scenes look less realistic but more dynamic and interesting.

Use the Internet and / or other available sources to find two more paintings by Paul Cézanne. Then, write a short article analysing his use of colour, shapes and perspective.

Colour, Shapes and Perspective in Cézanne’s Art —
Two other famous paintings by Paul Cézanne are The Card Players and Still Life with Apples. —
In The Card Players, Cézanne uses dark brown, blue and ochre colours to create a quiet and serious atmosphere. The figures are made from simple, solid shapes, which give them a strong and almost sculptural appearance. The table, the men and the background are shown from slightly different viewpoints, so the perspective is not completely traditional.
In Still Life with Apples, bright red, yellow and green fruit contrasts with the pale cloth and darker background. The apples are painted as rounded geometric forms. The table appears tilted, and some objects seem to be viewed from above while others are seen from the side. By changing perspective, Cézanne makes an ordinary still life energetic and original.
